From an email from Karl in Berkeley, California, USA:
Here as everywhere, all eyes were glued to the endless repetition of those few minutes yesterday morning. A lot of SF was shut down, particularly the financial district; the Transamerica Pyramid and other buildings were evacuated and all the bridges were operating under heavy surveillance. People just had no idea what might happen, and that feeling seems to be holding. It's so strange, since nothing has actually happened here, but streets are quite empty and I'm sitting in my office hearing lots of helicopters and sirens and such. Way more police than usual on the Berkeley campus -- perhaps because of all the scientific/military goings on here, perhaps also because there is great worry about pro-Israel/pro-Palestine clashes. Students are tabling as usual I haven't seen any flare-ups, though several Bay Area Arab/Islamic groups have received death threats and the like.
